How to Play Baccarat

Baccarat is a fast-paced table game played at most live casinos around the world as well as online casinos. The rules of the game are very simple.

How to Wager

The two hands dealt in Baccarat are arbitrary, they are not really possessed by anyone in particular. Therefore, each individual can make any one of three different wagers on each hand, bet on the Banker, bet on the Player or bet on a Tie. Once all wagers have been placed, the hand begins. The betting limits are set by the house.

The Hand

The cards are dealt by the dealer out of a shoe containing 6 to 8 decks of cards depending on the house rules. The dealer deals two cards to the Banker and two cards to the Player. Cards 2-9 count as face value. Tens-Jacks count as zero. Aces count as one. The dealer deals and flips the Banker’s cards face up. The Player’s cards are dealt face down, usually to the individual with the highest wager on the Player’s space who becomes the custodian. In Baccarat, there are no actual decisions to be made by the Baccarat players. The decisions are determined by the value of the cards.

How the First Two Cards Are Counted

The dealer adds up the value of the two cards for the Banker. If the cards total more than 9, the first digit is dropped and the score noted. For instance, a 6 and an 8 would total 14, drop the first digit and you have 4. If the total ends up being 8 or 9, the Banker is said to have a “natural.” A “natural” 9 is the strongest hand in Baccarat. At this point, the custodian reveals the Player’s cards. Again, the cards are totaled in the same manner as the Bankers. If either hand has a “natural,” they are declared the winner. If both hands have a “natural,” the hand with the highest “natural” is declared the winner. If both hands have the same “natural,” the hand is considered a tie. If neither hand has a “natural,” a third card will be dealt to one or both players based on the rules below.

The Third Card Rules for the Banker

If the two-card total is 1 or 2 – draw against any three-card hand
If the two-card total is 3 – draw against 1-7 & 9 / stand against 8
If the two-card total is 4 – draw against 2-7 / stand against 1 & 8-9
If the two-card total is 5 – draw against 4-7 / stand against 1-3 & 8-9
If the two-card total is 6 – draw against 6-7 / stand against 1-5 & 8-9
If the two-card total is 7-9 – always stand

The Third Card Rules for the Player

If the two-card total is 1-5 – always draw / Banker will resort to rules above
If the two-card total is 6-7 – stand / Banker draws at 0-5, stands at 6-9
If the two-card total is 8-9 – stand / Banker will resort to rules above

The Final Result

The hand with the highest score will be declared the winner and payouts will be made accordingly. If the hand ends in a tie, only the tie bets will be paid and the remaining bets will remain on the table as the action for the next hand.

Baccarat Payouts and House Advantages

The payouts on the Player’s space are even money, $1 for every $1 bet. The house advantage is 1.24%
The payouts on the Banker’s space are 95%, $.95 for every $1 bet. The difference is due to the house advantage being only 1.06% so they require a “commission” for this bet.

The payouts on ties are anywhere from 8-1 to 9-1 depending on house rules. The house advantage is a staggering 14.44% on this bet

Of all the table games played in gambling venues, Baccarat has the lowest house advantage. It also requires the least amount of participation as all the bettor does is pick a spot and watch the cards. Baccarat has always had great favor with Asian gamblers and has been gaining popularity in other parts of the world. The rules are simple and the payouts are simple. Therefore, the game is simple.
